I have had a notion. Would you care to guess at what it is, or would you rather I tell you?

I have reason to suspect that Moira is asking me to the travesty that will be the Valentine's Day ball. Did you have anything to do with this?

Beyond the apparent collective descent into madness currently typifying Ravenclaw House, what are the possible diagnoses of the world's present condition considering the evidence of Luna Lovegood's decision that: first, the two of us will be permitted to wander off the school grounds (although, in her defence, we are both of age, and I have no one outside of these walls who could tell not to leave them temporarily and expect them to listen); second, that we would be allowed into Smith's trial; third, that our attendance would give us some clue into the greater truth of the matter; and fourth, that I would ever do such a thing with her?

My father was never one who particularly enjoyed telling stories, preferring to leave the creative use of exempla to my mother. After her death, he didn't quite adopt the behaviour for himself, but there was one tale he developed a fondness for sharing. According to him, it was Ancient Greek in origin, and I never disproved this but it is yet my personal belief that he fabricated it himself. Regardless, I feel as though it bears sharing. So it goes:

in which there is a story. )

007. all we ever see of stars is their old photographs. [07 Jan 2010|12:46am]

I would not have thought that this needed saying, but apparently, I was wrong in so thinking. That said: whoever has been telling the first years rubbish stories about the Lestranges haunting the dungeons and the Carrows haunting Professor Flitwick's classroom, please kindly stop. As everyone has noticed, we have an increased number of first years this year, and such stories spread among them quickly, leading to an increased likelihood of either mass group panic or the irritation of several Prefects, who end up attempting to dispell these insane fictions and, in so doing, are met with resistance and headaches, at the least.

Actions have consequences, and while there is, technically, no rule against making the first years believe absolute falsehoods, do consider the fact that there are quite enough divisions within the school community already without the creation of new ones.

005. never despair. never surrender. [06 Dec 2009|08:40pm]
warded private to self. )

The word of the LORD came to me: "Son of man, with one blow I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes. Yet do not lament or weep or shed any tears. Groan quietly; do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban fastened and your sandals on your feet; do not cover the lower part of your face or eat the customary food of mourners."

So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. The next morning I did as I had been commanded.

Ezekiel 24:15-18.

004. blood from the shoulder of pallas. [05 Dec 2009|12:31pm]
[warded to Pansy, Blaise, Granger, Macmillan, & Potter]
Sunday appears to be the best day for this. Shall we convene at Azalea Grove in Canterbury around noon, then? As per a question from Macmillan: if you have any books you think may be of assistance, bring those, and bring whatever quill and parchment or equivalent suits your tastes. Everything else, I have here and, as you are to be my guests, it will be available to you.

003. you haven't idealised mankind; you've deformed it. [04 Dec 2009|11:12pm]
The whole is greater than the sum of it parts, and, as ever, it bears remembering: in an age of Neanderthals, to be remotely intelligent is an act of civil disobedience.

If it is the Ministry's aim to unite us against a common enemy, then I believe that they have nominated the single best candidate.

[warded to Pansy & Blaise]
This is not going to stand. If they think that we — by which I mean I, predominantly, though I do hope that neither of you will think to stop me in my course — will accept this move, they are sorely mistaken. I am making plans. Regardless of their thoughts on the rights and feelings of their citizens, I am outraged, and I refuse to be silent and inactive.

edit: [warded to Pansy, Blaise, Granger, & Macmillan; added later: Potter]
The idea has been proposed in a few places by now, but in the interests of keeping everyone as informed as possible and consolidating the discussions: action needs to be taken, and swiftly. Working together for the same ends is better for us than working separately. My home is considerably vacant and has the additional bonus of access to my late father's extensive library. If everyone is free this weekend, I will be hosting a session to organise our arguments, find legal precedents, and otherwise prepare to fight this move.

Granger, Macmillan — as you may have other interested friends, feel free to propose coming to them, but please inform me of any other interested parties before they come.

A recent trade has procured me a copy of one of the few books my Father had not already stocked in our library: Vyshinsky's Treatise on the History and Development of Slavic Runes and Rituals, translated by the author himself. Its brilliance may be unparalleled in the ranks of similar texts, though, as I've not yet finished poring over it, I am loath to say for certain one way or the other on the matter. That said, his appendices are certainly thorough and the presentation of evidence and conclusions is thorough, attentive, and well-argued without insisting upon itself or turning boring. I would not call the find miraculous, but it is quite encouraging nevertheless.

profile! [21 Nov 2009|03:06pm]
I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
